The McCarthy's have been up against all odds for 16 years. Starting with Dan making contact with the aliens called the Messengers to each new alien life form that comes from that encounter. Dan and Emma have a nearly 16 year old daughter, Piper, who is like no other child before her. They have been hiding her powers to protect her and to let her live a somewhat normal life. Time after time Piper has to use her power that is getting harder and harder to keep hidden. But as the skies darken and the situation seems to be deteriorating, she's called on again. When it comes to saving humanity, Piper is Earth's last, best hope...or is she...???In the conclusion of this wonderous Not Alone saga, we get the best book by far. The bad news is all the characters, story lines, adventures and more have come to an end. We have immersed ourselves with the writings of Craig A. Falconer for this awesome journey. And as always, he doesn't disappoint his readers. Thanks for the marvelous ride, Craig! You've done it again! Mr Falconer is a talented creator of unusual stories. He seems to have some experience in the advertising field for he goes on at length about sending the proper message to the public. He also repeats himself tirelessly about actions, thoughts, and considerations that have already occurred. I find this distracting as my profession has trained me to listen to every word, and derive meaning. At the same time I've become aware that I must repeat myself in order to communicate important details to others. More than once I've been in the position of saying, but I told you . . ., and the other person saying, but I didn't know that's what you meant. I enjoyed Piper's picking up on various nuances of what she was told, and figuring out a tactic based upon what was left unsaid. I related to that tactic because of my own predilection. This time in the story we are about to meet the engineer. I'm remembering the movie where data meets the Borg queen. The engineer is the race or whatever that created the architects that manipulated the messengers, and installed the pulses that destroyed Kerguelen, and almost destroyed the earth. We go through this process of using the pulse machine to fight the engineer, but that's too dangerous, or maybe not, but it's the last chance, but it won't work, but wait a minute, says Piper, you said it won't work this way, how about that way? In the meantime the engineer is 8 weeks away, but no he speeds up so he's only a week away woops, make that hours away. Then we find out the engineer wants Piper. What a setup. Would you believe Piper saves the world again? Maybe it's Rogue? How about the band of 24? Let's just say it's a cooperative effort where everyone pitches the ball to someone else. Now Mr Falconer makes every effort to close out every inconsistency in his story, but really, they get away with their scheme in the face of the senior person with uplift powers? I'm reminded of "Play it again, Sam" when Woody Allen says, "She bought it." I'd have better believed it if Colby had pulled out his uplift powers and smashed the engineers face in. Anyway, we do a cleanup chapter after the ending is complete so that all the loose ends get put straight, and we get our happy ending.
